Tube Amplifier Repair

Professional Tube Amp Service in Pearl, Mississippi

A great tube amplifier is worth keeping alive.

Geist’s Precision Guitar Repair provides professional tube guitar amplifier diagnostic and repair services for musicians throughout Central Mississippi, with specialized service available for many vintage, discontinued, and hard-to-service amplifiers.

Whether your amp has suddenly stopped producing sound, is humming, popping, blowing fuses, losing power, cutting in and out, or simply isn’t sounding the way it should, we can help determine what is going on and what it will take to put it right.

We make guitars play better — and we help keep the amps behind them working, too.

Tube Amplifier Services

Amp problems are not always as simple as replacing tubes. Proper diagnosis is important before parts are replaced unnecessarily.

Services may include:

  • No-output and intermittent-output diagnosis
  • Hum, buzz, crackling and popping problems
  • Power supply problems
  • Blown fuse diagnosis
  • Bias testing and adjustment
  • Power tube and preamp tube troubleshooting
  • Failed resistors, capacitors and other components
  • Effects loop problems
  • Reverb problems
  • Switching and relay problems
  • Input and output jack repair
  • Potentiometer and control problems
  • Burned or damaged circuit-board repairs when practical
  • Filter capacitor replacement
  • Transformer diagnosis and replacement when parts are available
  • General maintenance and reliability repairs
  • Vintage and discontinued amplifier troubleshooting

Because every amplifier and failure is different, repairs are diagnosed individually rather than sold as one-size-fits-all packages.

Carvin Amplifier Repair

Legacy • X100B • V3 • MTS • Bel Air • Nomad & More

Geist’s Precision Guitar Repair has a particular interest in keeping discontinued Carvin guitar amplifiers in service.

Carvin produced some outstanding tube amplifiers over several decades, but factory production of these guitar amplifiers has ended. As the remaining amps age, finding technicians willing to troubleshoot and repair them can become increasingly difficult.

We welcome Carvin amplifiers for evaluation, including:

  • Carvin Legacy / VL100
  • Carvin Legacy II / VL2100
  • Carvin Legacy III / VL300
  • Carvin X100B
  • Carvin V3
  • Carvin V3M
  • Carvin MTS
  • Carvin Bel Air
  • Carvin Nomad
  • Other vintage and discontinued Carvin tube amplifiers

Older Carvin amps can present unusual problems involving aging capacitors, switching systems, power supplies, circuit boards and components that may no longer be available directly from the manufacturer.

Our goal is to diagnose the actual failure before recommending parts or major work.

Nationwide Carvin Amp Repair

Mail-In Service Available for Amplifier Heads

If you own a Carvin amplifier and cannot find someone locally who is comfortable repairing it, Geist’s Precision Guitar Repair accepts selected Carvin amplifier heads from customers throughout the United States.

This service is especially intended for owners of discontinued Carvin amplifiers who want to keep their existing equipment rather than replace it.

How Mail-In Service Works

1. Contact us before shipping your amplifier.

Tell us the model, describe the problem and provide as much history as possible.

Please do not ship an amplifier without contacting us first.

2. We will confirm whether your amplifier is appropriate for mail-in service.

At this time, nationwide service is primarily intended for amplifier heads. Large combo amplifiers and speaker cabinets are normally better handled locally because of their size, weight and shipping risk.

3. Pack and insure the amplifier carefully.

The customer is responsible for proper packing and shipping to Geist’s Precision Guitar Repair.

We strongly recommend full shipping insurance for the replacement value of the amplifier.

4. The amplifier is evaluated.

Mail-in amplifiers are subject to the applicable diagnostic charge before extensive repair work begins.

5. Additional work is authorized when necessary.

If the repair is expected to substantially exceed the initial diagnostic amount, we will contact you before proceeding.

6. The repaired amplifier is tested and returned.

Return shipping and insurance are the responsibility of the customer.

Why Repair a Carvin?

For many players, these amps aren’t easily replaceable.

The original Carvin Legacy was developed with Steve Vai and has a distinctive sound that many owners have used for decades. The X100B, V3, MTS and other Carvin designs have their own following as well.

As these amplifiers get older, their value isn’t simply what another used amp sells for.

For the person who has played through the same amp for 15, 20 or 30 years, it may be the amp that produces their sound.

That’s an amplifier worth trying to save.

Other Tube Amplifier Brands

Our amplifier service is not limited to Carvin.

We evaluate many tube guitar amplifier brands and models, including vintage and modern equipment.

If you have a Fender, Marshall, Mesa/Boogie, Peavey, Vox, Ampeg or another tube amplifier experiencing problems, contact us with the make, model and symptoms.

Some amplifier models or repairs may be declined depending on parts availability, condition, previous modifications or the economics of the repair.

Before Bringing In an Amp

When contacting us, it helps to provide:

  • Manufacturer
  • Model
  • Approximate year, if known
  • Description of the problem
  • Whether the problem is constant or intermittent
  • Anything that happened immediately before the failure
  • Recent tube replacement or previous repair history
  • Any modifications that have been made to the amplifier

Please do not repeatedly replace fuses with larger values or continue operating an amplifier that is blowing fuses, red-plating power tubes, producing smoke, overheating, or making severe electrical noises.

Continuing to operate an amplifier with a serious fault can turn a relatively small repair into a much more expensive one.
